The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings as thunderstorms look set to hit Northern Ireland from today.

The Met Office-issued weather warnings come as heavy showers and thunderstorms look likely to cause flooding in some areas, while lightning strikes and hail could potentially cause damage to buildings.

The first of the two weather warnings is already in place and will be in force until 6pm this evening.

While the second thunderstorm warning will come into effect on Sunday, July 9 at 10am and will be in place until 9pm

The thunderstorm warnings are set to impact Northern Ireland counties including Antrim, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

What to expect from the Met Office thunderstorm warning in Northern Ireland

The Met Office said both yellow weather warnings were due to predicted heavy showers and thunderstorms across Northern Ireland.

These thunderstorms could cause flooding and may see power cuts in some areas.

Lightning strikes, hail and strong winds are also likely as part of the weather warning and along with deep and fast-flowing flood water could cause damage to buildings.

These hazardous conditions could result in delays to train and bus services and could also lead to difficult driving conditions.

Some communities might become cut off if roads flood.

Referring to the Friday weather warning, a Met Office spokesperson said: "Showers and thunderstorms may bring some heavy downpours to parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps accompanied by hail and frequent lightning.

"In some places showers and thunderstorms could merge to give a longer spell of wet weather.

"Where this occurs as much as 20 to 30 mm rain could fall in 2 or 3 hours in a few spots."

While about the Sunday weather warning, the spokesperson added: "Showers and thunderstorms, likely frequent in some areas, may bring some heavy downpours to parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps accompanied by hail and lightning.

"In some places showers may become organised at times to give longer spells of wet weather.

"Where showers are most frequent, or becoming more organised, there is the potential for 25-35 mm of rain in 2 or 3 hours."
