Fermanagh manager Pete McGrath is hopeful that Daryl Keenan will rejoin the squad for the 2017 season.
The Tempo man has been suffering with a back injury that has seen him play little football over the last couple of seasons, but McGrath is hopeful that the injury problem can be resolved and states that both the player and the management are eager for him to turn out in the green jersey next season.
“Daryl Keenan has had injury problems but Daryl knows we are very keen to have him come in and he is very keen to come in.
“It is a question of getting him sorted out medically and physically in terms of that injury.
“Hopefully, fingers crossed, Daryl will be in a position to join the squad, he is very keen and it’s a question of seeing what way this injury is going to pan out,” said McGrath.
Keenan is one of a number of potential additions to the squad with McGrath confirming that both Tiernan Daly and Lee Cullen will return to the squad after missing out last season.
Daly sustained a cruciate injury that ruled him out for the season while Cullen was unable to commit.
“Tiernan Daly will be coming back after injury and I’ve spoken to Lee Cullen and he will be coming back into the squad. He was unable to commit last year because he was based in Galway but he will be based in Dublin this year at UCD so he will be committing,” added McGrath.
The Fermanagh boss has also been keeping a close eye on a number players in the on-going club championship who he hopes to invite into the panel while a couple of others have also caught his eye.
“The players who maybe we had our eye on prior to championship, we still have our eye on them and maybe one or two others have come on the radar and will be asked but it is not a particularly big number of players,” he stated.
In terms of outgoings from the squad, McGrath will be without Niall Cassidy who has retired from inter-county football while Conall Jones and Richie O’Callaghan are going travelling.
“Conall Jones is going to Australia. He is possibly going after Derrygonnelly’s season ends and he is going for a year. Richie is also going travelling and at this stage we will be planning without him but that may change according to how things go for him abroad.”
Apart from Cassidy though McGrath is not expecting to lose any other players to retirement. McGrath has already meet with both Damian Kelly and Ryan McCluskey and both retain the hunger to play at this level although it is understood that while McCluskey is eager to return, it is on the provision that he gets the medical all clear following hip surgery.
“I have met most of the players individually and no-one else has said to me that they would not be in a position to commit to next year,” added McGrath.
McGrath is expected to contact those he intends to add to an extended squad over the next week and they will then meet up on Saturday week.
“The first official meeting of what will probably be an extended squad will be Saturday October 1. It will be a case of meeting up and presenting them our blueprint, our plans for moving forward, as I had been doing to these players individually anyway.
“Hopefully on that day we will have all the players there and we will be able to tell them what our approach is and how we feel the thing can be improved and moved on to the next level or the next two or three levels, whatever the case may be.”
